Clinical History

During intramembranous ossification, progenitor cells in an ordinary connective tissue cluster together and begin to differentiate into osteoblasts. The osteoblasts then begin to lay down and mineralize bone matrix. The temporal sequence of intramembranous ossification can be observed by following along the developing parietal bone of a fetal pig skull. The earliest stages are evident at the edges. Later stages are represented by viewing the appearance deeper into the bone.
