Case Discussion

Osteoarthritis is the most common disease of the joints and is characterized by the progressive degeneration of joint cartilage. This section shows only a small amount of residual cartilage. As the exposed bone rubs against its opposing bone, it becomes smooth like a highly polished surface ("eburnation"). The underlying bone also shows remodelling and sclerosis.
