Smooth muscle is a component of the wall in most of the hollow organs of the body. In this sample, a longitudinal section of large intestine has been placed inside a transverse section of the large intestine. The principle structural characteristics of smooth muscle can be viewed in the muscularis layer which includes both longitudinal and transverse sections of smooth muscle.
