62-year-old male construction worker with increasing shortness of breath and pleural based densities on a routine chest x-ray film.

Case Discussion

Most diffuse malignant mesothelioma arise in workers with direct occupational exposure to asbestos. The incidence of malignant mesothelioma is increasing because of prolonged latency period (> 30 years) from asbestos use and exposure. Initial chest x-ray films of patients with malignant mesothelioma reveal pleural effusions in over 75%. Mesotheliomas have a varied histologic appearance and include epithelial, sarcomatoid and biphasic patterns.
