Case Discussion

Mature cystic teratoma is a benign germ cell tumour, and the most common benign tumour of the ovary. Prostatic tissue is rare in ovarian teratomas. However, Vadmal and Hadju (1996) showed that the frequency of prostate tissue in ovarian teratoma may actually be more than reflected in the literature. After reviewing 25 cases of ovarian Teratomas, they found 3 cases with prostate tissue. This discrepancy in reported cases can be explained by the fact that these foci may be misinterpreted (as sweat glands for example), overlooked or not sampled. Although the diagnosis of mature ovarian teratomas is for the most part very straightforward, sometimes unusual microscopic features may complicate the interpretation.
