Case Discussion

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a non-melanocytic lesion derived from keratinocytes in the epidermal layer. It is the second-most common tumour arising from sun-exposed skin, after basal cell carcinoma.

While squamous and basal cell carcinomas can generally be distinguished with relative ease, there is a certain morphological spectrum, with this lesion representing perhaps an intermediate ground between the two entities. The distinction between basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (with squamoid features) is based on the typical features expected of BCC, such as retraction artefact and basal palisading.
