43-year-old female patient with an abdominal pigmented lesion.

Case Discussion

Pigmented spindle-cell nevus (of Reed) is a benign, sudden-onset, and heavily-pigmented skin lesion that clinically resembles melanoma. Generally, these lesions are more commonly seen in younger, female patients, often on the extremities (upper and lower limbs).

Sections show a superficial melanocytic lesion comprised of spindled cells, with heavy deposits of melanin. These nevi are typically predominantly junctional, as seen in this case. The particularly heavy cytoplasmic pigmentation is another eye-catching feature.
