Case Discussion
Serous tumour of low malignant potential of the ovary (also known as serous borderline tumour) is an epithelial neoplasm consisting of papillae with hierarchical branching lined by fallopian tube-type epithelium. The cytology is of low-grade nuclear atypia and mitotic activity without evidence of frank stromal invasion.
Typically, the patient has an asymptomatic presentation but abdominal pain may occur. The typical treatment is surgical resection of the fallopian tube and ovary. In this section, we see a portion of a well circumscribed cystic mass with papillary architecture. The cells appear stratified, have small nuclei and nucleoli. No mitoses are seen. The stroma is fibromatous and bland.
