Sections show a spindle cell neoplasm based in the submucosa. The spindle cells are bland, show pale chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli. The background cells consist of an inflammatory infiltrate of predominantly eosinophils and some scattered lymphocytes and plasma cells. The morphology is that of inflammatory fibroid polyp.
Immunohistochemistry for inflammatory fibroid polyp can show CD34 positivity. Stains would be negative for CD117. Inflammatry fibroid polyp is associated with a platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha mutation.
