Growing end of a long bone in a kitten. The growth in length of a long bone demonstrated in a longitudinal section of the epiphyseal plate. A combination of the interstitial growth of cartilage and its replacement by endochondral ossification take place in the growth plate. Growth plates are also referred to as epiphyseal plates. They are made up of the hyaline cartilage that remains between the centre of endochondral ossification in the diaphysis of the bone and that in the epiphysis.
