This tissue looks like a stratified epithelium, although there is only a single layer of epithelial cells present. The cells are columnar in shape, but the nuclei lies at several different levels. On first glance, his makes it look as though the cells are taked up on one another (stratified). They are not and there is only a single layer of cells present between the surface and the underlying connective tissue. Pseudostratified columnar epithelium is found in only a few restricted locations and true stratified columnar epithelium is very rare.
