Clinical History

Left adrenal mass, incidental finding on work-up for kidney stones.

Case Discussion

This adrenal cortical adenoma was an incidental finding, and was therefore likely not hormonally active. Examples of hormonal syndromes that can arise from such tumours include aldosteronism and Cushing syndrome. Grossly, bright yellow areas correlating to lipomatous metaplasia can be seen. This finding is not of clinical significance. Microscopically, a mixture of clear cells with abundant intracytoplasmic lipid and compact cells with sparse eosinophilic cytoplasm can be seen. The adrenal cortical cells express inhibin (see linked image.)
