Liver, Residual hepatocellular carcinoma, Trichrome stain

Liver, Residual hepatocellular carcinoma, H&E stain
Details
Disease Category
Organ System/Discipline
Clinical History

End-stage liver disease (ESLD), liver explant. History of multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma treated with radio-frequency ablation (RFA). No evidence of residual/recurrent disease.

Case Discussion

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignant tumour of the liver in adults, with cirrhosis being a well-established risk factor. While recurrent/residual disease was not suspected based on imaging, sub-centimetre lesions are often missed on radiology. This is a case where a hepatocellular HCC lesion was missed on radiology. These small nodules can pose a significant diagnostic challenge.

This slide shows H&E stain. See related content for trichrome stain.
