Clinical History

Breast implant with associated nodule.

Case Discussion

Silicone is commonly used as a filling for breast implants, and is generally inert if implant rupture occurs. In this case, small globules of silicone are present in tissue, and can be seen as empty spaces. Macrophages have attempted, unsuccessfully, to resorb the material, resulting in a granuloma formation. Shown here is the implant capsule.
