Papillary muscle ischemic necrosis
Clinical History

36 week (corrected) gestational age infant with a perinatal asphyxial injury who died one week post-partum.

Case Discussion

The papillary muscles are end-arterial territories, and as such are susceptible to hypoperfusion in episodic hypotension. In this case, the episode of perinatal asphyxia has led to ischemic pan necrosis of the papillary muscle myocardium.
