The ovary is commonly involved by endometriosis, defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterus. The gross appearance is of hemorrhage, "powder-burn" discolouration of the serosal surfaces, and of cysts containing old blood ("chocolate cyst"). Old hemorrhage and hemosiderin deposition can be seen in tissue sections.
