Diagnosis
Endocervical polyp with gestational changes
Clinical History
Patient is a pregnant 39 year-old woman at 28+2 weeks gestation. She was noted to have a cervical polyp which was subsequently excised. Her most recent Pap test 10 months prior was negative.
Case Discussion
The findings are of a benign endocervical polyp with gestational changes. Prominent within the polyp are expanded, branching endocervical glands. The glands have polarized nuclei and lack cellular atypia. The background stroma contains prominent inflammatory infiltrate interspersed between the smooth muscle cells. The changes represent a brisk reactive proliferation in the context of pregnancy, and should not be over-interpreted as malignant.
